His voyage to Oregon had been delayed interminably because the Mexican authorities in Yerba Buena, wanting to gain a share of the American trade for their own merchantmen, had found one excuse after another to prevent him from leaving port. Only when he had threatened to shoot his way out had he been permitted to leave.

His arrival created a profound stir. The Wendy Anne was the first merchant ship flying the American flag to reach the settlement, and the members of the community were quick to recognize the significance of the event.

Harry soon became popular with the settlers. Not only was he carrying all kinds of merchandise that the pioneers wanted and needed, but his prices were reasonable. Soon realizing that little cash was available, he proved himself amenable to barter deals, accepting smoked meat, furs, and lumber in return for the goods he was offering. He did a lively business and quickly became friendly with several members of the community.

Paul Thoman .came on board the Wendy Anne, admired the soundness of the schooner in spite of her age, and in return invited Harry to visit his as yet uncompleted shipyard. Impressed by the younger man's industry, Harry made several suggestions that proved valuable.

"It strikes me," he said, "that you're being too ambitious. You say you plan to make only fishing boats at first."

"Sure," Paul replied. "I'd need a whole team of carpenters to make anything bigger."

"Then cut the size of your dry dock in half. You'll finish it faster and get into production that much sooner. From what little I've seen here, there's a real need for fishing boats, and you ought to be able to sell them as fast as you can make them."
